Men 1987, after working on several games that were only marginally successful, Japanese game designer Hironobu Sakaguchi created what would be his last attempt at a hit. Titled Final Fantasy, Sakaguchi’s game was critically acclaimed and a commercial success, launching a franchise that has spanned 40 years and 16 titles – and counting. circular, they also produce and film adaptations. Sakaguchi himself directed one of the latter: the animation for the 2001 Final Fantasy: Ghosts Within.
Despite its title and source material being fantasy, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a war fantasy film. Later cited as the most compelling of the Mass Effect games, The Spirits Within may appeal more to fans of the franchise than to gamers. Final Fantasy. Sometimes, it feels like YouTube including cutscenes from games you can’t afford.
In a post-apocalyptic Earth, Dr Aki Ross (Ming-Na Wen) searches for a solution to the war between humans and the Phantom, mysterious creatures believed to be alien. Aki’s allies include her mentor Dr Sid (Donald Sutherland) – a nod to the recurring “Cid” in the game – and the Deep Eyes, an elite military group led by Captain Gray Edwards (Alec Baldwin), who is Aki’s old flame. They must find eight types of “spirits” that, when linked together, can end the conflict. Meanwhile, grieving the loss of his family to these alien entities, General Hein (James Wood) seeks to eradicate the Phantoms through violent means, even at the cost of Earth.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within puts an interesting spin on the idea of Gaia, which asserts that the Earth is one big organism; in the film, all living things carry souls and, when they die, their souls return to Gaia, where new life emerges. It is similar to the universe of Final Fantasy VII, the most popular entry in the franchise, although the philosophy of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is sometimes obscured by the fatness of sci-fi.
After being captured by the Phantom, Aki begins to dream of a distant war-torn world. The dream effects show the limits of CGI that was evolving at the time of the film with Aki set against an empty space and surrounded by uniform, static colors. CGI was amazing in 2001, filming until Aki had 60,000 each made of hair. But when the close proximity of irises and wrinkles fails to show the semblance of life, the voice of the stars intervenes to defend the illusion. Donald Sutherland pays tribute to Dr Sid while Steve Buscemi steals the show as the hilarious Officer Neil Young. Ming-Na Wen, calm and vulnerable, proves Aki to be determined and kind.
In 2001, Maxim magazine included Aki as the first (and only) absentee on its annual list of the 100 sexiest women, featuring her in a purple bikini on the cover. Born curiously by Sakaguchi and bearing the name of his late mother, Aki was designed to be a digital actor, who would appear in several projects. However, The Spirits Inkati was a box office failure due to its large budget and Sakaguchi’s dream for Aki turned out to be a myth. Recently, the rise of AI has revived similar ambitions, with the controversial “Tilly Norwood” now being cited as the first AI actress.
Unlike the 1987 game that made Sakaguchi a legend in the gaming industry, The Spirits Within was his first and last film as a director. Over time, advances in animation technology have made Final Fantasy: The Spirits In the relic of the digital aether. But even so, Sakaguchi’s passion and the animation team’s efforts are still evident in every frame. Twenty-five years, I have to start over.
