FIFA’s first comment on the political crisis between England and Argentina

The flag angered Britain

FIFA has this evening reacted to the controversial Malvinas/Falkland Islands flag raised by Argentina players after their 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) broke its silence a day after raising a banner that read: “Malvinas Islands are Argentine”.During the victory celebration at the “Mercedes-Benz” stadium in Atlanta, USA.

Is Argentina punished?

The flag, which was carried by a number of Argentina players after the final whistle before Giovani Lo Celso placed it on the pitch, appears to be in breach of FIFA regulations that prohibit any political display inside stadiums during tournaments organized by the international federation.

FIFA did not specify a timetable for the publication of its decision on a possible penalty, but in such cases it is accustomed to wait until the end of the tournament before making disciplinary decisions.

In 2014, the International Federation imposed a fine of 20,000 euros on the Argentine Federation for a similar message during a friendly match against Slovenia.

The punishment may be more severe this time, considering that the incident took place during the World Cup competition and because its photos were widely distributed around the world.

The Malvinas (Falkland) Islands are a small archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean over which Argentina claims sovereignty after Britain established control over the islands in 1833.

In 1982, a two-month war broke out, ending in a British victory, after the Argentine military junta landed forces on the archipelago, and clashes resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine soldiers and 258 British soldiers.
