FIFA World Cup: Why does Scotland’s John McGinn celebrate with glasses?

“That’s when Jack had a serious conversation about his eyes. It’s as tough a pair of glasses as you can get for a kid. You can see how much he struggles when he takes the glasses off.

“But it’s not just a reaction from him, and allowing him to be more comfortable playing football with his friends. It’s an awareness for young kids in Scotland, all over the world.”

McGinn, 31, says he regrets wearing glasses when he was younger, sometimes teasing other kids about him, now that he realizes how challenging it was.

And he also talked about how parents connected with him about the positive impact he had on their children’s lives.

He said: “Many parents have contacted me and said, ‘You inspired my child to get glasses’ or ‘You inspired my children to get their eyes tested.’

“If my celebration brings awareness, that’s the main thing. It was special to do it on the world’s biggest stage.”
