FIFA World Cup: Uefa to boycott tournament if Gianni Infantino’s investment plan goes through

UEFA’s 55 member associations have voted to abandon the World Cup if FIFA goes ahead with plans to sell stakes in the tournaments to private investors.

FIFA – world football’s governing body – made the decision at an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the proposal it announced on Tuesday.

European football’s governing body, Uefa, has made its opposition to the plans clear by issuing two scathing statements – and the strength of that sentiment has now been reaffirmed.

The ban would cover all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup, if FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s proposals are approved by member associations.

This position will be tested for the first time in October, when the Women’s World Cup play-offs will take place.

More to follow.
