His Napoli years – the Serie A title in 2024-25 and the acclaim that came with it – made him a player admired in Naples and recognized around the world.
McTominay is the star player of this Scotland team, a man with a giant mural on the side of a house near Hampden and a frame – of all nights at Central Bike Denmark last November – on a bank note.
He has scored 13, 16 and 17 goals for club and country in the last three seasons, some in Italy and others helping Scotland to the World Cup.
McTominay made 70 appearances and played a number of positions – right back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder. He is exactly where he wants to be right now.
He has seen Naismith develop into a player of immense substance both on and off the field. “He can skate around the field beautifully. He’s such an athlete,” he said.
“And look at his pass – it’s like you’re in a computer game. It’s like Super Mario when you get a mushroom and you get bigger, if that makes sense. He’s more powerful than anyone else.
“The last part is hoping he’s not an arsehole – and he’s not. He hangs out with the younger players on the team at dinner and talks to them.
“And the next day he can sit down with (John) McGinn and Robbo (Andy Robertson) and Kenny McLean and Grant (Hanley) and be a part of that.”
“And he can only be a little bit alone. He’s a social butterfly and it’s pure joy for him.”
It takes a lot of hard work to please McTominay. A nation will hope he still has a smile on his face in Scotland’s first World Cup game in their opening game against Haiti.
