The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has decided to launch an investigation into allegations of rigging the result of the Austria-Algeria World Cup match to suit the interests of both sides.
Reports suggested that the two rivals had agreed to a draw in their final group game to advance together in the knockout stages.
The match witnessed great excitement and ended in a 3-3 draw, and Austria equalized in the 96th minute. It came just three minutes after Algeria had taken the lead through Riyad Mahrez.
The goal included a rally that lasted five minutes and included 110 consecutive passes, and could eliminate Austria and return home.
In the end, coach Ralf Rangnick’s team took second place, while Algeria finished third, guiding them to the next round.
The British “Mirror” newspaper reports. Some critics claimed that the result was deliberately staged, as Algeria allowed the opposition to equalize in the last gasp of the match.
Sources confirmed to the Mirror that FIFA completely rejected the allegations and had no concerns about either team tampering with the outcome of the match.
For his part, Austria coach Rangnick dismissed the idea entirely, although Mahrez did little to dispel growing speculation that something was amiss when he admitted that the scenario ultimately looked strange and suspicious.
Riyad Mahrez, the former star of Manchester City, said: “It was a little weird to be honest. We were playing on the wings and they were down, but at the last minute someone passed the ball and it turned over and I have to move. I have to respect football. The ball goes in front of the goalkeeper and I have to score. The good thing for them (Austria) is that they scored and we qualified together, and that’s the most important thing.”
Austria will face a difficult match in the qualifying rounds against the European champion Spain, and if it pulls off a serious surprise, the next challenge will be a match against Portugal or Croatia.
Algeria, on the other hand, face Switzerland, and the qualifying draw puts them on course to meet Argentina in the quarter-finals if both teams continue to win.
