Eric Ciotti, the mayor of the French city of Nice, has called on FIFA to observe a minute’s silence at the start of the 2026 World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, scheduled for next Tuesday, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 2016 attack in the city.

According to the network highlighted RCC:Ciotti published a copy of a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino through his official accounts in French, calling for respect for the victims of the attack that killed 86 people of 19 different nationalities on Nice’s Promenade des Anglais on France’s National Day.

“As the first of two World Cup semi-final matches takes place on July 14th and will see the participation of the French national team, I would like to ask for a minute’s silence before the kick-off whistle to honor all those who lost their lives that night on the Promenade de Angla.”

He added that this gesture will have a great humanitarian value, noting that it will embody the solidarity of the football family with the victims of terrorism and their families.

The mayor of Nice emphasized that a minute’s silence before the match would be welcome, saying: “Such a tribute will be received with deep emotion by the families of the victims and survivors and by the whole of France.”

“It will also strongly reflect the values ​​of brotherhood, peace, respect and unity that FIFA and football in general want to promote around the world.”
