The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced today, Wednesday, that each team will be allowed to include 26 players in its roster for the 2026 World Cup, with a final announcement on June 2.

FIFA announced through its official website that the federations participating in the tournament will provide it with a preliminary list, which includes 35 to 55 players, including 4 goalkeepers. This provisional list will be used for internal purposes only and will not be published by the International Federation.

FIFA has clarified that the final list will include 23 to 26 players, including 3 goalkeepers, which is the same as confirmed for Qatar 2022.

“No player on the final list may be substituted, except for a player on the preliminary list, and only in the case of serious injury or serious illness, provided that this is done no later than 24 hours before his team’s first match of the 2026 World Cup.”

He continued. “A goalkeeper from the final list may be replaced by another goalkeeper from the preliminary list, in case of serious injury or serious illness, at any time during the tournament.”

Any of the participating teams can announce their roster at any time, but it is not considered official until it is confirmed on June 2.

In order for the players to join their teams in time before the World Cup, FIFA approved the start of the rest and preparation period and allowed the players to join their teams on May 25, i.e. the day after the last official match in which the players participate with their clubs.

FIFA explained that exceptions allowing players to join their squads include players who will take part in the finals of continental club championships before May 30, subject to approval by the International Federation.
