Felix Rosenqvist edged out David Malukas, then found his way past the Team Penske driver for the closest Indianapolis 500 win in history by 0.0233 seconds on Sunday.
Malukas looked like he had passed race leader Marcus Armstrong with one lap to go on the final restart, while Rosenqvist and Armstrong, teammates at Meyer Shank Racing, battled wheel-to-wheel on the back straight and through the fourth and final turn.
But Rosenqvist had enough power to snake past Armstrong and Malukas before making the decisive outside pass in the final 50 feet.
“What a car. Huge thanks to the team,” said Rosenqvist. “At the end we had two cars in the air and that’s a luxury position to be in as a team.
“I felt like we had the best car today. In all conditions, we had everything under control. That last yellow didn’t help us, but it worked right when I got back to third, and then I had a flat-out lap at the high line and it was the best.”
The closest previous finish came in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043 seconds across the brick yards.
It was Rosenqvist’s second career win in 120 IndyCar races and comes after the recent birth of his first child. He is the third Swedish driver to win the race.
“I really miss my wife and my newborn child. I wish they were here,” he said.
“I still can’t believe it, being a dad and winning the 500. Maybe you win the 500 and have a baby. It’s just unreal. Well done to Marcus and David in the end, they raced really cleanly – and you’ve got a really good race because of those guys.
A teary-eyed Malukas said: “I don’t know what else we could have done. We were the fastest car in that whole race. We gave it 150 per cent. I crashed the car almost every lap. I was stitched up with P2. I don’t know what else I could have given.
“I’ve given everything to this team, we’ve had a great month and they give me a lot of support. The people of this place. We’ll come back and give it 160 percent.”
