Thousands of Hyundai auto workers began to walk off the job shortly after talks with the South Korean carmaker failed to secure plans to deploy humanoid robots – the most difficult return to organized labor to date due to the latest wave.
The partial strike at a Hyundai car plant in South Korea’s Ulsan is “the first industrial shutdown involving humanoid robots,” according to The Wall Street Journal. Workers have already completed their two-hour day and night shift at the world’s largest car factory from July 13 to July 15, and are planning to start a four-hour strike from July 20 to 22 after 15 negotiations failed to reach an agreement, The Korea Times newspaper report.
Union pushback began when Hyundai Motor Group unveiled its latest model Atlas humanoid robotA two-legged robot that is more than 6 meters tall and can lift more than 100 pounds, launched earlier this year. Atlas is made by Boston Dynamics, a US robotics company that is about to become a a complete company at Hyundai.
