The Federal Communications Commission will vote to repeal a rule that would have required Internet service providers to list all of their so-called “passthrough” fees on an accessible price label. The FCC’s vote could also make price tags more difficult for consumers to find.
ISPs advertise prices that are much lower than those offered to consumers on their monthly bills. One way to raise monthly bills above advertised rates is through rebates, which, ISPs say, are used to offset government fees.
ISPs may reserve the right to advertise accurate monthly rates and charge those rates on monthly bills. But because ISPs rarely do this, the FCC has required them to disclose their pricing to consumers. for the last ten years.
