A by-election in Clayton has officially been triggered following the resignation of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage as an MP.
Reform MP Lee Anderson moved the article in the Commons on Thursday morning, which means that there will be a by-election date that could be Thursday, August 13, although this has not yet been confirmed.
Farage has said he will contest the Essex seat again in a by-election with “establishment populism” following further scrutiny of finances and parliamentary scrutiny.
Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems, the Green Party and Restore Britain have announced they will not contest the seat.
Questions over Farage’s finances have been sparked by a £5m gift he received from Thailand-based British cryptocurrency investor and major reform donor Christopher Harbor before he entered parliament.
The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is investigating whether he should have declared that sum if he was an MP in his published register of financial interests.
The Sunday Times reports that Farage has secured support from George Cottrell ahead of the 2024 election., ExternalIn the year A political ally who was jailed for eight months in the US in 2017 after pleading guilty to money laundering.
The reformist leader, who denied any wrongdoing, accused the parties of being “scared” to face him and said the lack of cooperation did not make the contest a sham contest.
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves not to allow Farage to resign as a member of Parliament until a parliamentary inquiry into him is concluded.
“The people of Clayton deserve the facts first,” Sir Ed wrote on Wednesday’s X.
Under the Parliamentary Act, an MP wishing to vacate their seat must write to the Chancellor, who can normally refuse but will accept the request as a matter of convention.
Reeves posted on X Wednesday that the by-election was “horrific and disappointing,” adding, “The people of Clayton deserve better.”
“But if he wants to spend the summer debating with Bean, that won’t stop him,” said Countess, a serial candidate who has announced Beanes’ intention to run against Farage.
Actor-politician Laurence Fox, leader of the Ricky party in nearby Pelden, announced on Tuesday evening that Adham Alkatip, who leads the Front Party, would also stand down.
