Michael, the recently released biopic of Michael Jackson, was heavily criticized by the director of Leaving Neverland, a 2019 documentary that. Jackson’s allegations of child abuse and Wade Robson and James Safechuck.
In an interview with VarietyDan Reed, who received death threats after the release of Leaving Neverlandsaid: “What this film does is create some things that show Wade, James and other people who accused Jackson of raping children as liars but don’t tell them.”
Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Loganit looks at Jackson’s early years and his first steps as a musician, he sang with his brothers in the Jackson Five and ended with his concert in London in 1988 after going solo, to great success.
Reed said that he has seen the film and “there is no clue as to what makes Jackson an antagonist”, adding: “He is a sexless plastic doll in the film. And of course, the story of his relationship with the children is greatly distorted by the fact that they show him as an unknown, grown-up child, which we know is not the whole story.”
According to Reed, the film fails to address Jackson’s abusive relationship with the children. “They’re saying that the reason Jackson likes children is because he’s an angel and he just wanted to be good to children, not because he wanted to sleep with them… Why is he dancing around this? It’s well known that Jackson spent a lot of time with his little boys, including putting them in his bed at night and locking the door, which is indisputable – and that’s only if someone is found guilty of child sex, but if someone has abused him in court. Jackson, none of these things seem like important.”
In an interview with the New YorkerFuqua cast doubt on Jackson’s critics and suggested that some of the speeches during the debate were biased.
“When I hear things about us – especially black people, especially those in a certain position – there’s always a pause,” said Fuqua, before adding that there was a second drama about Elvis Presley meeting his future wife, Priscilla, when she was 14 years old.
The manager also questioned the motives behind the crimes, adding: “Sometimes people do bad things with money”. Reed criticized his comment, calling Fuqua “a guy who has made tens of millions pushing fake news around a guy who’s a sleeper, that’s a bad thing.”
He added: “And as far as money goes, (director) Antoine Fuqua is said to have made $25m in production. Michael. Obviously, the (Jackson) area has made a lot of money. Everyone will make money except – guess who? – Wade and James. He never made a penny.”
Michael was released on Friday chart the biopic’s box office figures in the US and UK, earning $217m (£161m) worldwide.
Jackson’s daughter Paris publicly criticized the film’s script in September, denying that he had them and saying: “A big part of the film is about a certain part of my father’s interests that still lives in the imagination.”
Reed said: “The film turns reality on its head – black and white, white and black, and two and two make five… Reed added: “He became part of the collective mind, and the collective mind cannot include the fact that he is a babysitter.”
