Fabio Wardley warns unified champion Oleksandr Usyk: ‘I’ve got a belt and I’m not planning to stop there’ | Boxing news

Fabio Wardley will look for a heavyweight unification with Oleksandr Usyk after competing with Daniel Dubois.

Wardley was promoted to WBO champion after the Ukrainian vacated that belt. But Wardley will still want to push for a fight with the man who holds the WBA, WBC and IBF championships.

Usyk is an Olympic gold medalist, an undisputed champion at both cruiserweight and heavyweight, and remains undefeated as a professional.

Wardley is a more unconventional heavyweight champion. A ‘white collar’ boxer initially, he had no amateur experience but rose to the top as a professional.

He wants to pit himself against Usyk. “It’s just the thought process,” Wardley said Sky Sports News.

Boxing trainer Gary Logan has broken down the keys to victory for Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois in their WBO heavyweight clash on Sunday.

“When it comes to putting people up against Oleksandr Usyk, you try almost everything from the unconventional style of someone like Tyson Fury and then the well-schooled style of someone like (Anthony) Joshua or Dubois, for example, those strong guys.

“Maybe throw a curveball at him, white collar kid at him, and see what he comes up with.”

He must come through a tough test against former world champion Daniel Dubois, a heavy-handed puncher who knocked out Joshua in 2024.

“I want to be successful and I want to tick off the big names,” Wardley said. “I have a belt and I don’t plan on stopping there. This fight is a statement in itself.”

Fabio Wardley says he is ready for a slugfest against domestic rival Daniel Dubois to try to defend his WBO world heavyweight title.

Dubois shrugged off his own loss to Usyk. “It was just experience for me, learning things. It’s in the past now, I feel like I’m good now,” he said Sky Sports News. “I’m not even thinking about that. I’m thinking about the next fight.

“I put all that crap behind me and be the man of the future.”

Wardley is risking his title and future plans against a very dangerous opponent. But it’s a challenge he relishes.

“No one puts more pressure on my shoulders than me. No one is a bigger critic. No one is harder on themselves. No one expects more of themselves than me and you can see that in my fights and my performances,” Wardley said.

“There’s a quit mentality: ‘I’ll do this, I’ll pass, I’ll succeed.’ And again whether I’m favorite or underdog doesn’t change anything for me. I’ll always have that mindset and that mindset.”

Trainer Shane McGuigan has outlined what his former fighter Daniel Dubois needs to do to win his WBO world heavyweight title fight against Fabio Wardley.

Dubois is equally determined to win another version of the World Heavyweight Championship. “For me it’s the pinnacle. It’s a world title so it’s for me,” he said.

“Biggest moment of my life, really. Just for me and my team, getting another world title (fight) is huge. Perfect opponent to do it and looking forward to it.

“I live for the moment. I feel alive when I’m in a so-called stressful situation. I’m ready for it.”
