Exclusive: Metalenz Finds a Way to Create Invisible Face ID

A Primer on Metasurfaces

Metalenz’s optical metasurfaces technology is a lens system that uses a small portion of the glass material in most phones. Metalenz says more than 300 million of its metasurfaces are already being used in consumer devices today, replacing the sophisticated time-of-flight sensors that capture data and help with camera autofocus.

The company also developed a process for using these metasurfaces capture the polarization data. When light hits an object with specific properties, it creates a unique polarization signature. The reflective light of the black ice has a different signal from the off-road lighting. Using machine learning, this enables a system that can quickly detect black ice on the road and inform the driver.

With polarization data, its sensors can distinguish a real face from a person wearing an incredibly accurate 3D mask of the same person, because the polarization information from the light coming from the person’s skin is unique compared to the light coming from the silicone of the mask.
