You don’t know when you have to make mistakes in the short term. Today’s politics is much less predictable. Disasters don’t happen in time, and few stores stay open for wildfires or attacks. In early 2026, The wildfires and impending chaos are especially visible in the American West after record-low snow levels in the winter, which will also mean less water in the spring and summer.
That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and stock up on emergency supplies, disaster preparedness experts say—and stock up on the essentials that will keep your family healthy and safe in the event of a hurricane, flood, earthquake, hurricane, wildfire, or human failure.
But every tragedy is not the same. There are two main events that you should prepare for your family, says Jonathan Sury, a senior staff member at Columbia University’s. National Center for Disaster Preparedness.
In some cases, you may need to hop into the car with a travel bag, or toiletry bag, containing the essentials, such as three days worth of water, cleaning tablets or water filtersa a good flashlightand batteries. A burning fire can be a good example of this. In some areas, such as during a typhoon, you may be left sheltered, perhaps with no running water or access to electricity – and you are in dire need. good power bank or two. Regional wildfires may also require long-term emergency planning, considering smoke emissions and power outages for public safety.
“You have to think in that mindset, ‘We can have power,'” said the director of planning for the National Weather Service. Charlie Woodrum. “‘We may lose for a few days, or for a week, and we may lose water’… You have to prepare for power outages and water loss.” At that time, in January, he was speaking ahead the history of winter storms in many parts of the United States. But the same logic can apply to other disasters, from earthquakes to wind and fire.
Here’s how to prepare for short-term emergencies and what to stock up on in advance. This is not leading to civil war or the apocalypse, no. But the advice and resources here should help you and your family weather a natural disaster like a hurricane, flood, earthquake, or wildfire — not to mention a system failure in your water or power grid.

Update April 2026: I incorporated advice from University of Oregon wildfire experts Heidi Huber-Stearns and Amanda Stasiewicz, and added some information about wildfire preparedness. I added a couple of power banks, including one from Nimble and one from Ridge, and the Watch Duty wildfire awareness program. I also added the MERV 13 air filters and box fans needed to make a DIY air purifier in a pinch. Prices and specifications have also been updated, and out-of-stock items are updated where necessary.

Most of the time, you have little warning before an accident hits your doorstep. But evacuation orders can come suddenly—and by the time everyone in your neighborhood is raiding supermarkets for water pills and sanitizers, it may be too late to protect yours. This is especially true if the water suddenly boils.
The list of essential items in your emergency preparedness kit depends on your situation, your family, and your needs. As of October 2025, the Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains emergency equipment list on its website. Columbia University also maintains online resources on how to prepare or respond to disasters and emergencies, including Online configuration wizard to help each family understand their emergency needs.
