FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended 24 World Cup matches this summer, traveling thousands of miles by air across North America in just two weeks.
The tournament will be held in 16 host cities across 3 countries – USA, Canada and Mexico – and will see more matches than ever before after the expansion of the group stage.
And he showed BBC Sport network Infantino’s crop in the group stage, after he played in 24 matches, making around 27 trips on his private jet.
The climate impact of Gianni Infantino’s plane, in just two weeks, is estimated to be equivalent to the annual emissions of an average of 78 people.
Infantino played two matches in one day several times during the group stage, and the matches were often held in cities hundreds of miles apart, and on some days he made three separate flights.
The British Broadcasting Corporation was able to trace Infantino’s plane flights through flight tracking data, as the flight paths matched published photographs of Infantino inside stadiums in the same cities and on the same dates.
The longest journey Infantino made in the first two weeks of the tournament was 2,800 miles (4,507 kilometres), and that was from Vancouver to Miami on 13 June after taking part in the Australia-Turkey match.
His longest travel day, excluding overnight flights, was on June 15, when he traveled more than 2,700 miles (4,000 kilometers) across the United States from Miami to Seattle for a match between Belgium and Egypt.
He then traveled about 960 miles (1,545 kilometers) south to Los Angeles, where he attended the Iran-New Zealand match in the evening.
