“Paris Saint-Germain” coach Luis Enrique downplayed the importance of giving himself a personal title after his leadership. His team will win the Champions League Again.
Paris Saint-Germain beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after regular and extra time ended 1-1 at the Puskas Arena.
Thus, the French giant became only the second team to win the Champions League two seasons in a row.
Enrique said in statements highlighted by the BBC.
He added: “I feel a mixture of emotions: excitement, exhaustion and everything. But this is the best time of the season. We’re still champions and we’ve won the title for the second season in a row, which is amazing.”
Luis Enrique relied on the same ten players that started in last season’s Champions League final against Inter Milan, which the French side won 5-0.
Paris Saint-Germain became the second team in the tournament’s history to field the same ten players in two consecutive finals, after Real Madrid in 2017 and 2018.
Paris Saint-Germain also equaled the record for most goals scored in a Champions League game, taking their tally to 45, equaling Barcelona’s 1999-2000 campaign.
Despite his side needing penalties to decide the final, Luis Enrique believes Paris Saint-Germain deserved to win the title given their campaign throughout the season.
The Spanish coach told TNT Sports. “It’s amazing. I think both teams probably deserved to win, but looking at the way we’ve played all season, I think we deserved the crown.”
The Spanish coach sees no reason for “Paris Saint-Germain” to fight for the title again next season, but at the same time emphasized the need to update the elements of the team.
He continued. “We’ll try to be here in the final again next year, why not?”
He concluded. “When you have a lot of top players, you always have to update the team. There has to be competition for positions and new players coming in, and that’s normal for a team like Paris Saint-Germain.”
