While Toon was absent, others took their chances in the England shirt.
Aston Villa midfielder Lucia Kendall impressed in England’s 1-0 win over Spain, while Manchester City’s Laura Blindkilde Brown started against Iceland.
United teammate Jess Park has also played in the number 10 position, while Chelsea’s Lauren James is an option if he is not used as a winger.
While Toon said he has enjoyed watching his teammates improve, he is eager to prove himself to manager Sarina Wigman again this week.
“Whatever your journey in an England shirt, you’re never guaranteed to be selected,” said Toon.
“Every time the squad comes, you’re still worried you won’t make it. Having missed the last few camps, I knew I had to make myself available for this selection.
“I came to the last camp to see Alessia (Russo) and the girls and I reminded Sarina that I’m number 10 and I’ll be ready for the next camp.”
Despite his eagerness to impress Wiegman, Toon says he has to remember not to “put too much pressure” on himself and enjoy his return to action.
“I play my best football when there’s no pressure. That’s what I’ve tried to do. I know I’ve been out for a long time,” he added.
“I made sure I used the time wisely and I feel like I’m in a really good place.”
Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, Toon’s best friend, said it was nice to have her “comfort blanket” back in the England squad for this month’s matches.
“I obviously missed him when he wasn’t here. Everyone kept asking me if I was OK. I was like: ‘I’m fine!’
“He’s worked really hard to come back. The injuries are rubbish but he’s really matured in the last two years and in his body. I’m really happy to have him back.”
