England vs New Zealand: Shoaib Bashir backed as spinner for first Test

Spinner Shoaib Bashir has been backed as England’s first choice spinner for the first Test against New Zealand.

Bashir has been named in the Lord’s 12 squad for Thursday’s series opener and will keep his place in the playing XI as England consider the progress of their pace attack.

Sonny Baker is also in the 12, unable to compete with Gus Atkinson for the final spot in the squad.

Bashir did not play for England in the third Test against India at this ground last July; After taking the last wicket to win a thrilling contest despite a broken finger.

The 22-year-old returned to fitness in time for the Ashes tour but was completely overlooked in England’s 4-1 defeat.

As Bashar struggled in tour matches and at the nets, England explained his absence by pointing out conditions that were not conducive to bowlers.

“We strongly believe in Bash as an international cricketer,” England head coach Brendon McCullum told BBC Sport.

“When I look back, the reason why it wasn’t wanted in Australia wasn’t how the ball was coming out of the hand, we felt the conditions weren’t conducive to spin bowling – just like Australia.

“We are fully confident and optimistic about Bash as a cricketer and the role he can play for us.”
