England are in a tough position against New Zealand after a chaotic morning on the second day of the second Test at The Oval.

England followed an encouraging opening day performance from a team without captain Ben Stokes, with strange tactics, a crucial dropped catch and a brilliant Test century from Glenn Phillips.

This meant New Zealand moved from 291-7 overnight to 391 in total.

Emilio Gay’s half-century and stand-in captain Joe Root’s 46 saw England slip to 177-5 for the loss of three wickets for 35 runs.

And when James Rewe bowled Will O’Rourke late on, England trailed 222-6, 169 with the tail exposed. Jordan Cox is still unbeaten in 22 with Jofra Archer still scoreless.

England set up their own problems with the first ball of the day – a short ball trap for Kyle Jamieson off the bowling of Sonny Baker. The baker went for four byes and the day got worse from there.

Jamieson made a crucial 41 when he was on Ben Duckett after a terrible drop on 15. Archer did not bowl for the first 90 minutes of the day, including the second with the new ball, but then hit with the fourth delivery.

The home side caused another problem of their own when Duquette finished for 36, calling for a short single by the never-ending Gaye.

Gay and Root added 74, only for Ruth and Harry Brook, both of whom scored big for Matt Henry against England.
