How many times can England drink at the last chance saloon?
2-0 down in the 2023 home Ashes, the reign could be broken unless England win the third Test at Headingley.
Surely someone would have carried the can as the Ashes lost 5-0, avoiding a clean sweep as England were robbed of victory in Melbourne. What if Sam Curran had not saved 10 runs in the last over against Nepal to avoid the shock of an all-timer in the T20 World Cup?
Here we are again.
It is not certain that a loss in Nottingham will lead to a spike, although the noise that was deafening after the Ashes will be magnified again. How many defeats is too much? How much chaos is too much? When can a reset not be reset?
Stokes was honest and almost emotional when he spoke Wednesday, describing what he’s been through the past two weeks. If he looks dazed, he has batted more than an hour in the nets.
Some have noted that the skipper only refers to his time as captain in a short stint with plenty of references to “this week”. He also said that he loves being an England player and captain, so it seems unlikely that a departure is imminent.
Again, Stokes was adamant there were no issues between him and head coach Brendon McCullum, echoing what McCullum said on Tuesday. Perhaps we should take that at face value. Both said they were “good mates”.
But Stokes was not forthcoming when asked about what support he did or did not have from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
“It was a process that needed to be played out. The process was played out,” he said.
At this point, it is important to emphasize that the ECB has denied that he was asked to step down from the captaincy. When it was put to a senior source that someone wanted him out, the wording used to reject the suggestion was unprintable.
Neither ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould nor Chairman Richard Thompson have spoken publicly, so did not respond to questions about their positions.
Also, if Stokes leaves the nightclub before curfew, his contact with the board will be limited, until England start winning Test matches.
And, if the loss in the second Test is palliative, there is nowhere to hide this week.
England have their first-choice XI at Trent Bridge and Stokes needs some big names to step up.
At times, Jofra Archer has looked electric at The Oval and at others he has lacked match fitness. He needs to repay the slack that allowed him to play the full Indian Premier League.
The same goes for Jacob Bethel, who has batted just 14 times in red-ball cricket in the last 18 months. Almost a third of Bethel’s runs in his eight Test career came in his landmark century in Sydney, a knock he will not be able to shake off forever.
Stokes went to bat for Ben Duckett after the Noosa social media video, and now Duckett has to bat for Stokes – literally. This opener has not scored a half century in the last 14 Test innings.
In terms of doing everything they can to get the right result, England certainly look a lot more focused than Australia.
Admittedly they were understaffed in the coaching department and beefed-up backroom training improved.
Jamie Smith has barely had a wicketkeeping drill in Australia, yet hard at work is Sarah Taylor, who on Tuesday taught Josh Tongue a throwing technique to help his troubled shoulder.
Jitan Patel has been able to pay more attention to Shoaib Bashir and more coaches means more attention to the batsmen in the nets.
Trent Bridge has been kind to some of this England team. It’s home to Duckett and Jive, while Joe Root averages around 70 here. Almost a quarter of Bashir’s 68 Test wickets came in the two matches at Nottingham.
As for Stokes, it was here that he sealed his only Ashes series win – a stunning one-handed catch off Stuart Broad in 2015.
It is also the ground where Stokes played his first Test after being cleared of concussion in 2018. On that occasion, there were some boos. That seems unlikely this week.
Stokes said the environment is always mint. “I don’t think this week will be any different.
“After everything has gone the last two weeks, yes, I appreciate the support, but the team appreciates it too.
“Don’t think you’ve got to cheer just as big for me, make sure you cheer as much as you can for the other 10 players who are going to play for the country because we’re all going to be brave to win that series.”
