Ben Duckett’s stunning century built on an inspirational spell from Ben Stokes to lift England back into the crucial third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

In a stunning turnaround from the Black Caps’ 317-0 on the opening day, England took 10 wickets for 121 runs to dismiss the tourists for 438 and closed the second day on 223-2 – 215.

Captain Stokes, who was sidelined after a nightclub row forced him to miss the second Test, was a typically tireless motivator in the sweltering heat.

England failed to take a wicket in the first 40 minutes as Stoke conceded eight balls, three wickets and one wicket.

Shoaib Bashir took two overs and Jofra Archer took one, and he slapped Blair Tickner, who eventually dismissed the seamer in shock. Overall, 361-4 in the evening, New Zealand lost six wickets for 77 runs on Friday.

Given the conditions and the flat pitch, it was a brilliant effort from England who set up Emilio Gay to cut the deficit for a duck.

Assisted by Jacob Bethel, Duquette capped a difficult year on and off the field with his first 100 tries since last June.

As the second wicket pair added 179, New Zealand were powerless to counter England’s rapid progress.

Duquette was eventually bowled out for 113, leaving Bethel to slip to a loss of 74 – the first half in the home and the first innings of a Test. Joe Root, 21 years old in one of his most prolific careers.
