The England women will benefit from the captaincy change, he said Sky Sports Cricket Simon Dole brutally thrashes the Test team at Lord’s.
England were bowled out for 270 runs In the first women’s Test at the home of cricket, which marked the final game of Tammy Beaumont and former captain Heather Knight’s illustrious international career.
The absence of the two retirees leaves a significant gap in the top order – one that will increase the pressure on current captain and No.3 Nate Syver-Brant.
Doull believes that relieving Sciver-Brant of the captaincy will allow him to focus more on his game, with vice-captain Charlie Dean – who effectively held the role during the World Twenty20 – set to take the reigns.
“(Replacing the captain) is exactly what I would do,” Doull said Sky Sports Cricket podcast
“England need Nat Syver-Brant as captain more than they need him as a batsman. I will look at that.
“That’s no disrespect to Nat’s captaincy. That’s more important to England. And his batting and his runs are more important now that Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont have gone.
“What I’ve seen from Charlie Dean in recent times, his cricketing ability, his ability to captain and bring out the best in difficult situations – that’s what captaincy is to me.
“Nat has done a fantastic job. He’s taken them to the World Cup final again, but he’s England’s best player.
“Charlie’s ready. And to me, that’s where I’m going now.”
Two disappointing defeats at Lord’s within a week of losing the T20 World Cup final to Australia, Sky Sports Cricket Eboni Rainford-Brent believes there is a plethora of promising domestic players who could replace Knight and Beaumont.
“(Charlotte Edwards) needs to go home and do some serious homework,” he said.
“First, he has to rebuild what his team looks like for the next generation. It’s one of those things where you’re trying to work for the next tournament and decide for the World Cup finals around the corner.
“Now that Heather’s gone, Tammy’s gone, it’s kind of the end of an era.
“Are they going to get a left-handed back in Jodie Greycock? Is it going to be Emma Lamb? Are they going to bring in Davina Perrin? They have to work out which people they’re going to focus on.
“However, can we improve their skills? So they’re not just matching these teams, they’re surpassing them. That’s a lot of work to do.”
Former England pacer Tash Farrant also echoed the importance of a forward mindset with the skills needed to compete at the international level.
“Charlotte Edwards is probably going to look for people who have that stingy mentality,” Farrant said.
“That’s probably where England lacked – because they might be a little bit below Australia in terms of skill, but it’s really a mental aspect of it.
“The Hundred is very important to come up. I’ve been in and around the domestic system and I know there are very good players, but you don’t know what you’re going to get from them until you put them up against the best players in the world.
“I’m really looking forward to The Hundred because there are places up for grabs – not just because of the retirements, but because we haven’t really won anything.
“Can the next crop of players get their hands on something like The Hundred, get themselves into some training camp in the winter, get themselves in front of Charlotte Edwards?
“Time to see some new faces.”
