England opener Danny Watt-Hodge is expecting “fireworks” from his struggling opening partner Sophia Dunkley when they face India in the decider of their Twenty20 series on Wednesday night.
Dunkley averages 16.40 in England’s five Twenty20 internationals so far this summer and has scored just 26 runs in the two games against India, adding to the pressure already faced by the Surrey star at home in the World Cup.
But Wyatt-Hodge – who is back in only his second match since the birth of his first child – has backed his long-time team-mate to deliver, and says it is only a matter of time before Dunkley hits the big score he desperately needs.
“I told him the other day, I said his intentions were unbelievable,” Watt-Hodge said.
“You fail more times than you don’t open the batting in T20 cricket. That’s the nature of the game.
“He threw himself out there to be brave from one ball, and that’s a credit to him. I’m very proud of him. And he looks really good. And I think a big score is just around the corner. Hopefully here at Taunton, it’s usually a pretty good batting track.
“I’m expecting fireworks from Sofia tomorrow night.
“It will be great for him. And, you know, he’s been so successful in this format for England over the last few years.
“And it’s an amazing feeling walking with him. We have a good laugh out there. And hopefully we can give a few more tomorrow. I think there’s a great confidence in the group.”
Wyatt-Hodge is no stranger to silverware, having been a key part of England’s World Cup winning side in 2017, but is relishing the chance to win another international trophy on home soil.
“Maybe there will be a bit more pressure on us. It’s a home World Cup, but I think we really need to enjoy the opportunity.
“This home World Cup doesn’t come around very often. So I think whatever for me, I’m going to really enjoy the opportunity.
“And when I’m on it, I’m on it and I’m hungry to run and contribute for my country.
“I know the rest of my team will be the same and take each game as it comes.”
