England’s woeful fortnight ended with a crushing defeat in the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval – set up by a senior official at Trent Bridge.

Under the shadow of the controversy over absent captain Ben Stokes, an inexperienced England team was beaten by a 253-run victory against New Zealand.

With no hope of escape, England began to bake the final day, trailing on 182-5, chasing an imaginary 463.

New Zealand seamer Matt Henry’s brilliant innings lasted less than an hour, taking 6-29 in a career-best 11-109.

Joe Root was on his third over of the day for 77, again lbw to Henry at keeper, and the tail was exposed.

Jofra Archer was the bowler, Matthew Fisher played and Josh Mlas was caught at first slip for a golden duck, giving Henry his first Test 10-wicket haul.

And England were beaten when Jordan Cox tried to sweep and Henry had New Zealand’s best match figures in Tests in England.

It means two weeks after a confident first Test, England will be looking to move on from a turbulent period and face the crucial third Test.

Celebrating victory at Lord’s, Stokes and Pace bowler Gus Atkinson broke the England team’s midnight curfew and were present when a member of security staff was punched by a Saracens rugby player.

The pair stood down for this trial pending an investigation, the outcome of which must now be revealed as England must name a squad for Trent Bridge.

While both players are expected to return, Stokes, as captain, was given a clear indication when both were ruled out of their county games on Sunday morning.
