England v New Zealand: Joe Root appointed captain ‘game by game’ but Ben Stokes ‘envious’

Stokes, a close friend of Roots, breached the team’s midnight curfew the day after the first Test victory and was left out of the England squad when a member of England’s security staff was punched by a Saracens rugby player.

“You are living differently than the rest of society.

“Over time this has taken its toll on the team but also on myself.

“I found myself so overwhelmed by everything that I wasn’t the person I wanted to be and not only was our schedule not where it needed to be, but it was the right time to leave.

“It was a great opportunity for a new start for England cricket and it was absolutely the right decision.

“On that side, it will be good to practice the captaincy side with Baz and this coaching staff.

“I’ve never had more fun and more from a coaching staff.”
