A point of three lion’s tusks
Ghana imposed their defensive control in a match that pitted them against their English counterpart and managed to grab a valuable point in a game that saw the Three Lions’ clear control and dangerous attacks but no goal in the 2026 World Cup competition.
England started the match with intense attacking pressure as Declan Rice sent a ball from outside the area just wide of the post in the 14th minute. Elliott Anderson then continued his efforts in the 15th minute with a shot from the center of the area that deflected off defenders, before Jude Bellingham’s shot from the right wing in the 33rd minute also bounced off defenders.
In the 37th minute, Declan Rice missed a dangerous opportunity with a header from the center of the area that went just over the bar.
Permanent control
England’s dominance continued in the second half as Anthony Gordon’s shot from the left wing in the 57th minute was blocked by the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Noni Madueke then followed up with a shot from the right wing in the 57th minute but it deflected off defenders before Elliott Anderson headed in a Rice cross in the 61st minute but it went over the bar.
England stepped up the pressure as Harry Kane sent a shot from outside the area in the 69th minute, but the Ghanaian keeper blocked it. Bukayo Saka then missed a golden opportunity in the 70th minute with a header from Madueke’s cross that went over the bar, before Nico O’Reilly headed home a cross from Rhys James for Ghana in the 86th minute, then Harry Kane followed up but was lifted in the 8th minute.
Ghanaian reflections
On the other hand, Ghana relied on counter-attacks as Antoine Simenho sent a ball from the right wing in the 50th minute, but it hit the defenders. Prince Addo then fired a shot from the center of the area in the 79th minute, but it was also deflected off the defenders, settling for a goalless draw.
The result leaves England top of the table with 4 points, the same as Ghana, followed by Croatia and Panama, goalless after losing the first round, while they meet in the second round on Wednesday morning.
