Spin bowling was the most neglected area of England’s Ashes masterplan in Australia. After asking Shoaib Bashir to learn on the job, England turned to batting all-rounder Will Jacks for four Tests, with predictable results.
In that sense Jacks is the man to own and the battle to be England’s number one spinner looks wide open.
There will be irony in England that Bashir, who was selected for Test cricket when he failed to get a game for Somerset and is now a regular for new county Derbyshire, is likely to leave.
Jack Leach remains perhaps the most reliable spinner in the country, while leg-spinner Mason Crane is bowling well for Glamorgan eight years after winning England’s only cap. Nottinghamshire left-armer Liam Patterson-White, Sussex off-spinner Jack Carson and Northants all-rounder Calvin Harrison were honored in county cricket.
Perhaps now is the time for England to invest in Rehan Ahmed. In the year In 2022, Ahmed became the youngest player to play for England at the age of 18 and was an original baseball selection.
Ever since he hovered at the top of the England team, none of the five Kopis brought home a single spin.
Ahmed will have his moments as a young footballer. If England need a spinner to handle the final, Root and Bethel are logical options.
With six first-class hundreds, Ahmed is a good number eight, meaning England will never have to worry about the tail batting as they rotate their Pirates. When Stokes retires, Ahmed can move up the order as England’s all-rounder.
Leicestershire’s Ahmed Ahmed is currently in the Indian Premier League, although his Delhi Capitals face a battle to reach the final. England have shown that the duration of the IPL is no obstacle to Test selection.
With England at its lowest ebb, Ahmed brings some mystery, fun and excitement.
