England 1966 Messi’s debut? Pele and 1970 Brazil? Ranking the best World Cup finals

4. Brazil 5-2 Sweden (1958)

Who is Pele? The teenager was already a superstar in Brazil, netting goals at an astonishing rate and becoming his country’s young goalscorer, but the striker didn’t appear on the wider football world until the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup after arriving in Sweden with a knee injury.

He netted against Wales and scored a hat-trick in the second half against France in the semi-final, with his impressive performance reinforced in the final.

The 17-year-old Pele, who wears the number 10 in his provisional blue shirt, scored twice in the 5-2 win – his highest score in a World Cup final.

His first, chested the ball over a defender before curling into the bottom corner, remains one of the greatest goals ever seen.

This was Brazil’s first World Cup victory, and Pele’s 1999 World Cup victory

“I remember seeing him sitting by the radio and crying,” Pele told FIFA. “And Brazil lost the World Cup,” he said.

I remember him jokingly saying, “Don’t cry, Dad – I’ll win you the World Cup.”
