Emma Radukanu withdrew from Wimbledon due to injury the night before her opening match.
The British No. 1 was due to face Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in Monday’s first match on Court 1, but confirmed on Sunday night that she would not compete due to a stress fracture.
Radukanu has been nursing a right lower leg injury since playing in the Queen’s final in early June, but there were fears for his participation at the All England Club on Saturday when he cut short a training session when he was seen strapping his lower leg.
He later confirmed that he was battling an injury. Earlier Sunday, after coming through practice with injury partner Alexis Kanter, he planned and hoped to be able to compete in the tournament.
But a final scan which revealed the injury had turned out to be a stress fracture forced him to withdraw the night before his opening match.
Radukanu wrote in a social media post on Sunday evening: “I can’t believe I’m saying this but sadly I have to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon.
“I’ve done my best to try and get to the start line tomorrow but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’m managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing.”
He added: “Playing at Wimbledon, in front of the home crowd, means everything to me, so it’s really hard to process.”
Radukanu has not won a tour-level tournament before or since winning the US Open title as an 18-year-old qualifier. But she impressed at Queen’s Club with some of her best tennis since the win before losing to Donna Vecic in the final.
He said earlier Sunday that he first felt the concussion during the clay-court season before it worsened in a grass-court warm-up event.
“Queen’s, that week, was too loaded for me,” he said. “Five matches after not competing for a while. But I’m managing as best as I can with my team, exhausting all options and doing what we can.”
