When Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, was made head of Trump’s Department of Public Works, he took a knife to foreign investment. He said billions are being lost to corruption within USAID and wasted on useless and wasteful programs, including $50m to buy “Hamas condoms” in Gaza. But he was talking about Gaza wrongly.
The Gaza Strip in Mozambique has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in the world and relies heavily on USAID for treatment and prevention. When Musk shut down the agency, it sparked a movement, putting millions of lives at risk. Al Jazeera went to the Gaza Strip to see the real effects of Musk’s brutal cuts.
