Elodie and Delphine Riley: Guernsey sisters compete against each other at the 2026 Commonwealth Games

“I think it’s really cool that we push each other,” said Elodie Riley as she raced her sister in the 200m freestyle heats at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Seventeen-year-old Elodie was kicked out by her 19-year-old sister Delphine during their heat at Tollcross Pool in Glasgow on Saturday morning.

But despite big sisters ensuring family bragging rights, having your siblings by your side seems like an advantage.

“Coming to such a huge international event, it’s nice to have some familiarity to ease us into it,” added Elodie

“We’ve never done anything like this before so it’s definitely good to race with my sister.”

Delphine’s time of 2:11.01 was 0.67 faster than Elodie as she finished fifth in her heat, two places ahead of Elodie.

They finished the event 28th and 30th respectively in a field of 36, led by Australian Olympic gold medalist Lani Pallister.

“I’ve never been to a meeting this big before,” Delphine said.

“I went to the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad, that was also amazing.

“But it’s an incredible atmosphere and it’s amazing to see such big names racing and just watching them by the pool.”

The pair were in the same heat for the 400m freestyle on Friday and will also compete in the 800m freestyle on Tuesday.

“I feel very motivated and hopefully aim for the next Commonwealth Games as well,” said Elodie.

“I would really love to do it again, it was an amazing experience.”
