Eight people have been charged in connection with a child sex gang inquiry by Gwent Police

Eight people have been charged with 34 offenses in an investigation into historic child sexual exploitation.

Police arrested the men from Newport, Swansea, London, Birmingham, Lancashire, Edinburgh and the Argyll and Bute areas of Scotland.

Operation Oak involved a complex and lengthy investigation into gang-based child sexual exploitation in South Wales, said Det Supt Andrew Tack, from Gwent Police.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said 17 charges, including rape, had been approved.

The inquiry focuses on allegations by several women that they were sexually abused as children between 1985 and 1996.

Attorney-General for Wales Jenny Hopkins said prosecutors had “sought to ensure that there was sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it was in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings”.

“We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are active and they are entitled to a fair trial.”
