Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national team, attracted attention on the night of the 2:0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
Mbappe was able to score the first goal and assist the second, bringing his tally to 8 goals, taking the top scorer in the tournament, equaling Lionel Messi.
According to the Opta Football Statistics Network, Mbappe joined the rare list in World Cup history, becoming only the fourth player in the last 60 years to combine a goal, assist and missed penalty in the same game.

Ironically, Messi achieved the same feat just 3 days earlier in Argentina’s Round of 16 tie against Egypt, which ended in a tango 3-2 victory, after he scored a goal and assisted another despite missing a penalty.
Although Mbappe missed a penalty in the first half against Morocco, he was undeterred by the missed opportunity and continued to lead the French attack before scoring the first goal and the second to send his country into the semi-finals.
The figure reflects the extent of the impact the two stars have had in the current edition of the World Cup, as they each managed to make a decisive impact in the qualifiers despite missing a sure chance from the penalty spot, a rare feat that was repeated twice in just three days.
