The Egyptian national team won a historic victory over New Zealand with a score of 3-1 in the match that brought them together today, Monday, in the second round of the seventh group of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute with a special header through Finn Surman amid a lack of defensive control from the Egyptian players.
Egypt turned the tables in the second half with hat-tricks from Mustafa Abdel Rauf Zico (59th minute), Mohamed Salah (67th minute) and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet (82nd minute).
In the second half, Egypt missed numerous chances to add to their scoring chances, most notably the one missed by Zizou in the 93rd minute when he shot at the keeper but shot late, thus squandering the opportunity.
This victory is Egypt’s first in the history of the World Cup finals, after participation in 1934, 1990, 2018 and 2026.
Egypt led the group with 4 points, ahead of Iran in second place, and Belgium in third place with 2 points each, while New Zealand is in fourth place with one point.
