As far as the play-off groups go, Swindon Town may be one of those who live up to the competition’s reputation for drama and excitement.

But there are two experiences in the 1990s that will be remembered by many.
In the year After finishing fourth in the Premier League in 1990, Swindon defeated Blackburn Rovers in a two-legged semi-final to reach the final at Wembley.

Ten days later, the club was found guilty of 35 illegal payments. Instead of celebrating promotion, they were relegated to two divisions, which was reduced to one on appeal, with Sunderland promoted instead.
Three years later, Swindon returned to Wembley with another chance to reach what is now the Premier League.
The Foxes scored three goals in 12 second-half games as player-manager Glenn Hoddle’s Wiltshire side won 3-0 against Leicester City.
Paul Bodin was Swindon’s hero with six minutes to go, scoring a penalty for the final.
Redemption came for Swindon, but for Bodin there was heartbreak six months later when he missed a penalty for Wales in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Romania.
