A 6-5 penalty shootout semi-final loss to Port Vale In 2022 And 5-5 In the second game, they were drawn against Sheffield United. In the year 2015 will live long in the memory of City fans for a variety of reasons.

But there are two experiences in the 1990s that will be remembered by many.

In the year After finishing fourth in the Premier League in 1990, Swindon defeated Blackburn Rovers in a two-legged semi-final to reach the final at Wembley.

The club had been under investigation for financial irregularities since January 1990, although the results of the investigation were not finalised.

In the first year of a one-off final at the National Stadium, Swindon faced Sunderland in the semi-final, who beat rivals Newcastle.

Alan McLoughlin’s 25th-minute strike won the game for Swindon and they secured promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history – or so they thought.

Ten days later, the club was found guilty of 35 illegal payments. Instead of celebrating promotion, they were relegated to two divisions, which was reduced to one on appeal, with Sunderland promoted instead.

Three years later, Swindon returned to Wembley with another chance to reach what is now the Premier League.

The Foxes scored three goals in 12 second-half games as player-manager Glenn Hoddle’s Wiltshire side won 3-0 against Leicester City.

Paul Bodin was Swindon’s hero with six minutes to go, scoring a penalty for the final.

Redemption came for Swindon, but for Bodin there was heartbreak six months later when he missed a penalty for Wales in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Romania.
