Manchester United have agreed a £35m (€40.5m) deal with Italian side Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson.
The 26-year-old will sign a four-year deal with United, with an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
With Ederson still to undergo treatment, sources say the transfer should be completed by early July before United start pre-season training.
He will be the club’s first signing since appointing Michael Carrick as permanent head coach last month.
The deal will be subject to £3.9m (€4.5m) in additional payments.
It is the first of what could be three central midfield additions to Carrick’s squad this summer.
United are prioritizing that spot on the pitch, which has been weakened by Ederson’s compatriot Casemiro, 34, whose contract expires at the end of the month.
Ederson, who has three international caps, was named in Brazil’s extended 55-man World Cup squad but was left out of manager Carlo Ancelotti’s final selection.
United are also interested in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandez, although the relegated London side are looking for a substantial return on the Portugal midfielder who cost them more than £40m when he joined from Southampton last summer.
United are also keen on England’s Elliott Anderson, although the Nottingham Forest player would prefer to join Manchester City.
As well as strengthening their midfield, United are looking to bring in a left-sided player, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Benjamin Cesko among the players on their radar.
They are yet to decide on the precise make-up of their goalkeeping squad, which could include Radek Vitek, who enjoyed a superb campaign on loan at Bristol City, where he won their player of the year award.
The 22-year-old Cech told BBC Sport in April that he was open-minded about the future but wanted to play regularly, suggesting he would not return to Old Trafford as back-up to Sene Lammens.
It is understood that former first choice Andre Onana has been told he can find another club, although it is unclear how easily the Cameroon international’s wage demands will be met as he will benefit from United’s promotion to next season’s Champions League.
Ederson, 26, has managed to fit across a number of central midfield roles for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals in 180 games for the Serie A outfit in all competitions.
Run by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United revamped their data analytics operation under Michael Sansoni and was significantly involved in identifying the right targets, working with former high-ranking Mercedes Formula One director of football Jason Wilcox.
Carrick confirmed he had been involved in recruitment meetings since he was named as Reuben Amorim’s temporary successor in January.
