Ebola cases in DRC have risen to 676 as Kenya protests over US plans

In one of the CDC’s worst cases, where only 20 percent of Ebola cases are isolated, most estimates show more than 20,000 cases and 4,000 deaths in just three months.

When the US withdrew from the World Health Organization and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was dissolved, the American contribution to the intervention has been smaller and slower than it was in the past, reducing the overall response.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s isolationist approach to travel restrictions and border closures has sparked controversy in some countries. The government plans to ban even US citizens from returning to the country if they have been diagnosed or infected. Instead, the US is trying to set up a temporary settlement in a military base in Kenya, a country that has not been affected by the outbreak.

They have plans it led to anger and violent protests among Kenyans. According to reports by The New York Times, protesters accuse Kenyan officials of bowing to Trump for allowing the virus to spread in the country, admitting Americans who refuse to participate.

“We are deeply disgusted by the government’s willingness to sell national security and the lives of its citizens for foreign aid,” the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union said in a statement.

The Times reports that hundreds of people have gathered for a protest in Nanyuki, a town near the airport. At least three protesters have been shot and killed in clashes with police, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

Although a court in Kenya temporarily stopped the quarantine facility from reopening, the Trump administration is moving ahead with the plan.
