In the United Kingdom, the cost of damages to people injured by e-scooters and e-bikes has reached 110 million pounds, the BBC reported.
It is only seven years since the first claim was made and the largest individual payout is £20m. Such claims have pushed drivers, allowing insurers to cover the bill more efficiently.
Alison, not her real name, when she was hit by a personal e-scooter while crossing the road in Coventry last year, with a broken hip, wrist and finger as well as cuts and bruises. She hopes to receive compensation for her injuries.
“It was a nice sunny day so we were all in a good mood,” she said. “All I knew after that was the gravel and I was on the floor.
“It was an instant pain, you know when the TV went gray? That’s what my eyes were doing.
“I was at the crossing. I thought it was safe. You just don’t wait.”
Trevor Chandler, 47, from Coventry, shows how she and her friend were crossing the road when he drove straight into her.
Chandler broke his leg but escaped, eventually being caught and imprisoned for 15 months. The vehicle was destroyed.
Allison, a claims settlement agency like the Motor Insurance Bureau (MBB), wants the sale of these vehicles to be better regulated and, in some cases, banned.
Experts say it has contributed significantly to the annual increase in premiums for ordinary members of the public.
They have become a common sight on the streets of the United Kingdom, but they have become significant dangers.
Micro-mobility vehicles – including e-scooters, e-bikes, mobility scooters and now e-unicycles too – have become a concern for commuters in cities and urban centres. All are legally classified as motor vehicles.
