Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for at least $15m (£11m, A$20.6m), claiming the electronics company used her image to sell its TVs without paying her or asking for permission.

According to the legal complaintfiled in a US district court in California on Friday, Samsung began using Lipa’s image on a TV poster printed on its cartons for “a large portion” of its TVs sold in the US last year.

When the 30-year-old British singer found out about the photo in June 2025, he said he immediately ordered the company to stop using it. Samsung he was “ruthless and merciless” and “repeatedly refused”.

“Ms. Lipa’s face was used prominently in a consumer advertising campaign without her knowledge, without consideration, and over which she had no say, control, or input,” the lawsuit states. “Ms. Lipa did not and would not allow this to be used.”

The suit claims Lipa owns the photo, which was taken backstage before the Austin City Limits festival in 2024.

Lipa alleges copyright infringement, California civil rights violations, a Lanham Act claim, and trademark claims.

The lawsuit alleges that Samsung profited financially by providing its features, while the lawsuit cites comments on social media from its fans.

“I get that TV because Dua Lipa has it,” he wrote. This is how I think. That’s how much I love him.

“I wasn’t ready to buy a TV anymore but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” wrote another.

Another wrote: “If you want anything to sell just post a picture of Dua Lipa.”

The suit alleges that Lipa was “extremely selective” in the creation of licensed products and had deals with Apple, Porsche, Versace, Bulgari and Nespresso, among others. Samsung’s behavior “disrespects him for his efforts in establishing a successful brand and prevents him from controlling and monetizing his assets”, the lawsuit reads.

Lipa is seeking an indefinite injunction against Samsung and “at least $15m” in actual damages, punitive damages and legal fees.

Samsung has not yet responded to requests for comment.
