‘Don’t wait until you want revenge’ – why prenups are on the rise

Julia Rogers, founder of US pre-investment platform HelloPrenp, says couples are getting married later.

“You might have some (university) debt, you might have started a business or bought a house. So at 34, you have a lot to look forward to and a lot to lose,” she says.

In what is known as the “great wealth transfer,” some members of the younger generation are acquiring greater wealth to manage. It’s usually their parents who move those legacies behind the ring fence.

And while preemption has been criticized in the past for limiting women’s rights, Rogers argues that it has evolved and now benefits from giving women like her a chance to articulate their rights from the start.

“We want to make sure we have honest, open and transparent conversations about life goals, financial issues, roles and responsibilities at home, so that we can have a long and happy marriage and not end up in the same situation as our parents,” she says.

Celine says most of her friends think prepping is a good idea.

It only cost her a few hundred dollars online, but even if she had to pay lawyers it would be a worthwhile “investment” in the marriage, and while less expensive, it’s probably more important than the wedding itself.

After all, she and Charles have “difficult conversations” out of the way.

“We haven’t had a single argument about finances,” she says.
