Sarcastic instructions on how to deal with the outcome of the match
The British Embassy in Argentina has attempted to calm the tense atmosphere ahead of England’s 2026 World Cup semi-final clash with Argentina with a sarcastic post on social media, given the historical sensitivities surrounding the game that go beyond football.
The embassy posted on its official Instagram page what it described as an “internal memo” to the official managing its social media accounts, which included sarcastic instructions on how to deal with the outcome of Wednesday night’s game in Atlanta.
The memorandum stated that if England won, it was required: “celebrate in style, nothing more”, but if Argentina win, the instructions state “congratulate the winner, wish them luck in the final and not spread non-existent conspiracy theories”.
The message added that the use of ironic images (memes) is allowed “but with some tact”.
The letter ended with the sarcastic signature “Her Majesty’s Emergency Office regarding the England-Argentina World Cup match” and contained an amusing line that said: “As they say in the corridors of Oxford. the oven is not ready for cakes.’
The account management of the embassy attached the note to the message, in which he says: “I know everyone is expecting us to release something about the game that applies to everyone, but they haven’t made it easy for me. This is the memo I received… and you decide.”

The announcement seeks to acknowledge the sensitivity of the clash and reduce tensions surrounding it, as the game is linked to many Argentines over sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, known in Britain as the Falkland Islands, in addition to the long history of sporting rivalry between the two countries.
Just a game
The announcement by the embassy was preceded by a statement issued by the Association of Argentine Veterans of the April 2 War (Falkland Conflict), calling for the suspension of football and the issue of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.
The statement, entitled “The issue of Malvina is non-negotiable… and memory is preserved in all arenas”, said that “sport is not a war and not a means of revenge, it is just a game”.
For his part, Lionel Scaloni, the coach of the Argentine national team, emphasized the need not to confuse football with political or historical issues during a press conference held on Tuesday.
Scaloni said: “It’s a football match and I can’t mix things up, especially respecting what happened so many years ago. It would be crazy to combine the two at a time when the world is witnessing real wars.”
“As Argentinians, we must remember those who took part in those events and their families, but what is the fault of today’s players or the people of today? It would be a mistake to confuse the two issues.”
