Donegal International Rally: Spectator dies in accident and rally cancelled

A spectator died in an accident at the Donegal International Rally on Saturday and the remainder of the event was cancelled.

A joint statement from governing body Motorsport Ireland and rally organizers Donegal Motor Club confirmed that a “young male spectator has died” following a crash on stage 12.

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon on the first pass of the Gartan stage of the rally, which was the 20th of the three-day event – one of the biggest motorsport events on the island of Ireland.

The rally was suspended after the incident while two spectators were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

It has been decided to cancel the rest of the rally as a mark of respect to the organizers.

Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club said they “express their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased” and asked that their privacy be respected.

Motorsport Ireland and An Garda Síochána have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

It is the first fatality at the Donegal International Rally since three-time winner Manus Kelly died in a crash in 2019.

Five-time World Rally Championship winner Chris Meeke was leading before the rally was halted ahead of Calum Devine and Josh McMahon.
