Do You Need to Pay for a Translation Program?

This is, without a doubt, more work than installing Wispr Flow. Once done, you have a working program without monthly subscription. I recommend trying it.

Some Free Alternatives

As I said before: AI writing and LLMs are all very common technologies. It should come as no surprise that there are many Wispr Flow options out there right now.

For Mac users, it is completely free and open source MacParakeet it’s a good way. It is open source and free to download and use without an account. There are no sales in this program. Writing is handled using local models, either Parakeet or Whisper, and various LLMs – both local and online – are supported at the drawing stage. It’s the closest free app to Wispr Flow I’ve found.

VoiceInka Mac-only alternative, it’s open source and free to use if you download the code from GitHub and build it yourself. The program costs $25, one time, after which you can use all the features without paying. Note that this configuration step requires an API key from services such as Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI, or Claude.

Windows and Linux users should check it out FOSS Voquillwhich is completely free, open source (hence FOSS), and works offline. It doesn’t offer a deduplication step, which is disappointing, but I’m including it because it’s the best free Windows and Linux solution I’ve found without annoying upgrades.

Windows and Mac users who do not like the above for any reason have one choice: OpenWhisper. This unlocking tool does not require an account (but you should find the small “Continue without account” button). The app offers subscriptions, but you can choose to install local keys and external API keys instead to avoid paying.

Do You Really Need to Write in Your Own Words?

Wispr Flow has its advantages. It’s easy to set up, for one thing, and has a user interface. I can understand why someone would choose to pay for a subscription. But if money is tight right now, there are free options available.

I was happy to see this growing section, but I was glued to my keyboard. Wispr Flow, and programs like it, promise to let you write at the speed of thought, but I write faster than I thought. If I can be philosophical for a second, writing is Why? I think. Writing a sentence, checking it, and editing it isn’t a frustrating part of the writing process – it is and writing method. And I often don’t know my opinion on something until I have time to think about it. I can’t help but feel the information that would be lost if, instead of writing, I just talked to my computer.

But every brain is different, and these tools may work best for you. That’s why I’m glad there are so many options out there.
