However, the movie helped create the legend of Space Camp, which opened four years earlier. Since then, more than 900,000 children between the ages of 9 and 18 have “graduated” from the program. Among them are at least half of NASA’s astronauts, including Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Kate Rubins, Serena Auñón-Chancellor, and the mission specialist for the recently flown Artemis II mission, Christina Koch.
Some of the exhibits and activities at Space Camp have grown a little, but Isaacman’s gift should help revive the programs.
Some of the new features are a parachute “simulation room” that has a real 10,000-ft drop and wind simulation, a drone lab, a communication system, and “training exercises” that will recreate zero gravity experiences.
The Artemis mission led by Koch and three other astronauts appears to have rekindled interest in the space program. Space Camp officials say enrollment has increased this summer since the successful completion of the April program.
Interest is expected to grow even more in the coming years when NASA returns to the Moon and establishes a habitation there. Its purpose is to meet the needs of children who are interested in places with modern activities.
“Based on the success of Artemis II, America’s return to the Moon is just beginning,” Isaacman said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new space station.
“And it’s that kind of magic that inspires the next generation to attend Space Camp, to experience this country’s economy, unlike anywhere else in the country, and to grow up ready to pick up the baton and take part in this great adventure.”
