Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway review – motorcycle whodunnit cranked up to highway | Video

Coming hard on the heels of Last Year’s One Eye Flashback comes the 29th adventure of the movie Conan Edogawa (voiced by Minami Takayama), a gumshoe forced to take the body of a child. Meanwhile, the franchise seems to have evolved Akira: The first 10 minutes open not only with a seemingly headless motorcycle passing Conan’s gang in the countryside, but three other choppers tearing up the road to Yokohama like a wall of death.

The half-pint sleuth and pals go to a motorcycle convention, where the star of the show is Chihaya (Miyuki Sawashiro), an auburn-tressed motorcycle cop who has been tracking criminals. The real attraction of the town, is the amazing black motorcycle that carries two more wheels; Conan looks at the schoolboy furtively, as he does, while Chihaya continues to investigate. At one street corner, they put a hole in a flower tree where their old boss Asagi (Yuko Sanpei) killed a suspect.

With a plot twisting around the themes of self-driving cars and big data, Fallen Angel of the Highway is going through the gears of another very interesting whodunnit. But it’s not entirely satisfying: Conan continues his habit of pushing forward with what appears to be a compelling narrative, rather than a satire. When the young man becomes almost a plot device, not a single character makes sense in his place – not even Chihaya’s plot, involving his bomb-throwing brother, who feels he has a plot involving 20 cars.

But the potboiler tendencies don’t detract from the franchise’s brio, which is on full display in director Takahiro Hasui’s superb visuals. The sharp and vivid graphics contrast with the vivid cityscapes, always using the visuals for an extra punch in the video. Although most of the exorcisms don’t affect Akira’s spirit, they have their own powers that are very impressive. If you can deal with the issue revometer is always cranked up, it is difficult not to be swept together.
