Despite a €400m loan… why is La Liga letting Barcelona make deals?

Two questions determine how Barca regained its financial flexibility

On May 29, “Barcelona” announced the signing of a contract with Anthony Gordon. This addition was surprising, as his name was not among the most discussed names as a potential player to strengthen the ranks of the Catalan team.

But it was the value of the deal that drew the most attention, as the Catalan club paid 70 million euros, which is a very high sum considering the spending the club has spent on contracts in recent years.

Barcelona have long suffered from the constraints of Financial Fair Play rules and the high wages of their players. Because of this, he was not able to acquire enough players and in many cases he faced great difficulties in registering his new deals.

“Deco should have made an exceptional effort to strengthen the squad and should be praised for the successful selection he included,” writes Marca, as it reveals Barcelona’s moves to avoid the hurdles of playing money in La Liga.

Gordon and maybe Julian Alvarez

“This difficult period is coming to an end. Signing Gordon is the first step and the second would be bringing in a straight forward. Regardless of the outcome of the transfer market, the club intends to spend 100 million euros on Julián Alvarez. This is an investment of no less than 170 million euros, which is likely to be a large number. central defender”.

Flexibility limit…costs of previous seasons

This €170 million is significantly more than what Barcelona have spent on reinforcements over the past three seasons, particularly since Deco took over as sporting director. Total spending during that period was 114.5 million euros, on the signings of Vitor Roque (30 million), Oriol Romeu (3 million), Dani Olmo (48 million), Pau Victor (5 million), Juan Garcia (25 million) and Rooney (3.5 million).

Barcelona have returned to the 1:1 rule and have a cap on flexibility in their wage budget.

Tight control – increased revenue… and higher wages

What happened to make this possible? First, increase revenue. The club has made great efforts to attract new sponsors. Another key factor is the team’s return to Camp Nou. The stadium has contributed to increased revenue and this growth is expected to continue in the coming seasons. Currently, the club’s budget exceeds one billion euros, and in the next season it can reach 1.2 billion euros.

The departure of some players also helped increase the available salary cap space.

“The departure of high-paid key players such as Robert Lewandowski, Clement Lenglet, Ansu Fati, Ilkay Gundogan and Sergi Roberto also played a decisive role. This opened the way for new players to come. And we don’t forget the role of the Spanish league (La Liga), whose strict control prevented Barcelona from going overboard.”

A loan of 400 million euros

Marca continued. “The second question is how can the club sign new deals while also getting… A loan of 400 million euros Complete the renovation of the “Camp Nou” stadium?

The answer is that this money is not used to pay off the debts, but rather Barcelona will pay off the loan from the money received from the sale of Camp Nou. This does not affect the transfer regulations regulated by La Liga.

The new stadium loan was specifically designed to be repaid from additional revenue expected from the future Camp Nou stadium (eg VIP services, hospitality, museum, naming rights, new sponsorships, etc.) rather than from revenue allocated to the team.

In fact, the club has always maintained that the financing of Espaí Barça (the renovation of the Camp Nou and the construction of a sports city around it) is completely separate from the sports administration.
