Experts agree that the US and China will extend the temporary trade agreement established at the last meeting between Trump and Xi, as both sides will benefit from that stability. But it remains to be seen how Trump will allow trade as China uses its influence to push its big questions. These could include US reforms in Taiwan, easing of export restrictions to give China access to advanced technology, and possibly the removal of Chinese companies from the US sanctions list.

However, China does not need to get its big requests to be seen as a winner at the conference, Kennedy said. “As long as there’s no blow-up at this meeting and President Trump doesn’t go and look to escalate, China will come out stronger,” Kennedy said.

Trump’s best results may be coming out of Beijing with “fun and good looks, but nothing that hurts the United States or hurts our friends and allies,” Schiffer told Ars.

“That might be the expectation to dial down, but I think I’ve won at this point,” Schiffer said.

At the very least, Trump needs to score symbolic victories from Beijing, experts agreed, if he wants Republicans to have something to do before the midterm elections.
