France coach Didier Deschamps has admitted that the Roosters’ top spot in the FIFA rankings does not make them the most likely candidates to win the 2026 World Cup, in a remarkable statement that put Morocco among the tournament’s strongest teams.

Morocco is in the top seven

After announcing his final list, Deschamps asked a damning question during the press conference he called, in which he revealed his great respect for the Moroccan national team.

“France are top of the FIFA rankings, but do we have a better chance of winning the tournament than Spain, Portugal, Germany, England, Argentina, Brazil and Morocco?”

With the announcement, Deschamps ranked the Atlas Lions among the seven strongest teams in the world alongside traditional football giants, in a rare acknowledgment of the power that Morocco’s national team has represented on the international stage.

Focus on the first match before thinking about the final

Deschamps urged his players to focus on their opponents in the group stage before thinking about moving forward in the tournament, saying: “I know there are high expectations, but in our first three matches we will face strong opponents. Let’s focus on the first match.”

He added: “The result is the most important thing. The competition is at the highest level and there are expectations. But the final is still far away.”
